Artist Statement:

Each of my art works tells a story.  There is movement, action in each one.  Zoom in, Look closely to see the tiny nuances of storyline playing out in the background.

Nothing is there by chance.  Every element –whether it is collage, paper, ink, color, texture, or something else–serves a specific purpose.  The goal is always so that if you were to string them all together with the painted portions, you could read the tale I am telling as clearly as if I had narrated it to you in person. Can you see it?  Do you feel the development of a plot?

The life of a crop duster is a dangerous one, flying at low altitudes leaving little room for error.  But many of our nation’s farmers depend on them to keep our food sources robust.   Fertilizing on the Fly is a tribute to those dedicated men and women who take on the task.

Entitled “Sam” this mixed media piece is built with various art papers, torn newsprint, torn magazine, acrylic ink and acrylic paint on a gallery wrapped 24 x 30 stretched canvas.

I felt completely Inspired by this small-town, local tavern.  I was energized by the staff who clearly loves what they do. Who are these people behind the bar?  What things have they seen and what stories have they to tell?   What’s behind those knowing smiles?

Oh! and all those taps, the ever-changing chalkboard of craft beer options, and all of the textures and colors of the room.  I couldn’t wait to paint it.  In this painting the textures are recreated with newsprint, magazine clippings, and texture tools.

Entitled “Steam Engine #9” this mixed media piece is constructed with art paper, newsprint, acrylic ink, and acrylic paint on a gallery-wrapped 24 x 30 canvas.

When I was little we used to sit and wait for the train to come by.  I remember how the earth rumbled and how we used to count the cars.

Tradition continued when I had children of my own.  We would grab an ice cream cone and park the car near the tracks and just wait.   The excitement on my daughters’ faces when they’d hear that whistle was worth every minute of the wait!   My youngest still gets excited to see the train, and she is 29.

What we never got to see was a genuine steam engine, so I decided to paint one. All that power!   Can that trestle even hold the weight? Can they feel it shaking beneath them? Do they hold their breath as the cross over?

Entitled “51 Ford” this mixed media piece is constructed with art paper, newsprint, acrylic ink, and acrylic paint on a gallery-wrapped 24 x 24 canvas.

When young my father owned an old pickup truck.  I have no idea what make or model it was but I remember it being the same basic body contour of this 51 Ford.

I painted this on the 16th anniversary of Dad’s passing, in his honor.  I thought that if Dad still had that old truck it would probably be a bit rusty, so Dad would pull it up near his barn and grab some tools and start tinkering, like he always loved to do.    The trees in the background and the barn are constructed with headlines from the 1950s, just to give clues to the year of the truck.

Entitled “Fishing Boats” this mixed media piece is constructed with art paper, newsprint, acrylic ink, and acrylic paint on a gallery-wrapped 24 x 30 canvas.

In the first nine summers of my life, almost every summer weekend was spent at the ocean.  Once in a while we would make our way over to Galilee, RI to see the fishing boats.  Oh how they smelled like fish!  I recall the smell, the gulls swarming around, and all those masts.

This piece is a semi abstract remake of a photograph I found on the internet. I do not know who the photo belongs to.  If it is you and you recognize this as sort of similar to your photo, contact me so I can give you credit.  It’s a great shot.  Obviously I’ve taken artistic license.   The background land mass is comprised of a computer printout of information about Galilee.  Much of the pier is made of art papers overpainted with acrylic.   The stormy sky is created with acrylic inks.  And I’ve added some elements to create visual interest.  It’s a gloomy day in Galilee, but oh so pretty!  Can you feel the mist in the air?  Can you hear the gulls?

Entitled “The Old Wharf” this mixed media piece is constructed with art paper, newsprint, magazine clippings, acrylic ink, and acrylic paint on a gallery-wrapped 24 x 30 canvas.

Growing up in Rhode Island–the Ocean State–means you do lots of ocean activities.  Clamming, swimming, boating, and going to all the ports are some of them.

This piece is a recreation of an old 1930 postcard of a pier in East Greenwich.   Obviously I’ve taken plenty of artistic license.   The buildings are constructed with newsprint.  Some of the boats are made from magazine clippings. The red boat is actually clippings of lobster (FUN!) The painting is left fairly loose so that you can allow your imagination to fill in the blanks.  One thing I was sure to add was those seagulls that are ever present wherever fish of any kind comes into play.  Do you see them all swarming the boats in the distance?  Can you hear them?  Can you hear the deep hollow gong! gong! gong! of the boats clanging together?

Ahhhh summer.

Entitled “Busking” this mixed media piece is constructed with art paper, newsprint, sheet music, acrylic ink, and acrylic paint on a gallery-wrapped 24 x 30 canvas.

We love to travel, and one of the things we love to encounter is live music out in public spaces.   This piece is created in honor of the musicians we met on a trip to Nashville.  It’s semi-abstract with most details missing.   I wanted the busyness of the scene to come from the musicians and the tourists.  The details that are there are loosely painted or drawn in.   Did you see the sheet music behind the windows?   Can you hear the harmonica? Can you feel their soul coming out in their music?

You can own this original piece for $325,  including, of course, a signed Certificate of Title guaranteeing its provenance.

Entitled “Oh Peter!” this acrylic painting was originally created as part of a working dog series that I did a few years ago.  It is on an 18 x 24 stretched canvas.

My father loved to garden and he passed that love on to me. I love to garden and I loved everything about painting this painting.  The flag.  The hare.  The scarecrow.  I loved the Americana colors.  I loved the sunflowers.  The dog.  To have so much great in one place was better than I could have dreamed of.  So much fun!

I had given this to my husband’s grandmother as a gift.  She has since passed and Oh Peter is now up for sale.  You can get Oh Peter for $325, including a signed Certificate of Title guaranteeing its provenance.
